About the Item
The artist says this was one of the first paintings he created under the name Bruce Sargent (1898–1938). The Boxers is a striking double portrait of the same model, an actor named Patrick, shown twice as he wraps his hands before a fight. The dim, smoky setting and strong contrasts of light and shadow give the piece a tense, intimate feel.
