About the Item

A captivating painting depicts a two-masted ship prominently featured in the foreground, accompanied by several other boats and a distant buoy on the serene horizon. The meticulous attention to light and subtle atmospheric detail renders the work with exceptional precision. The painting has undergone careful relining and sympathetic restoration, preserving its original period frame. This frame harmonizes with the composition and period character, enhancing the painting’s overall presence. William Dunnage (1809–1870) was a highly esteemed British marine artist of the 19th century who specialized in intricately detailed ship portraits and evocative coastal scenes. Operating in London from at least the 1830s, Dunnage produced maritime subjects such as the topsail schooner “Commodore” and the schooner “Parga.” These examples have been exhibited in auctions and achieved notable prices, thereby solidifying Dunnage’s reputation as a respected and accomplished maritime painter of his era.
