Kraugerud studied at the Norwegian School of Crafts and Art Industry (1930) and the Norwegian Academy of Fine Arts under Halfdan Strøm and Axel Revold (1930–32). His work blends German Expressionist influences with French modernist traditions, reflecting study trips to Spain, Portugal, and Paris (1934–47).
Known for his robust, textured figures and lush, often somber palette, Kraugerud developed a distinctive style. His forest scenes and figurative works reveal affinities with Paul Klee’s naivety and Georges Rouault’s boldness, yet retain a uniquely rough expressiveness—evident in early pieces like Sidewalk (1937).
