About the Item
A striking and atmospheric depiction of women fetching water in jugs and urns, descending into a lovely, picturesque hill town in Italy, this painting was made in 1942 by Sophie-Louise Wachtmeister, a kind of "Renaissance Woman" in 20th century Sweden. The artist grew up in a royal family, traveled across Europe to further her studies, learned at the feet of Antoine Bourdelle and other great artists in France, and exhibited at the famed Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in 1925. She was an accomplished sculptor and fabric artist, and painted a number of striking paintings, such as this example. It is oil on canvas, and maintains its original frame.
