About the Item
A cross between "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights," this marvelous painting depicts an interlaced group of faeries and nymphs, all with lilacs and daisies in their hair, in the faint light of the moon. One nude is handing a bird to someone standing in a doorway, and another is diving toward a figure with the head of a horned goat. The entire scene is full of mystery and weirdness. The painter was Fritz Janschka, an Austrian-born artist who was part of the Viennese Surrealist movement, and came to America in 1949 to teach at Bryn Mawr College. He is known as a literary artist, and also illustrated a famous edition of The Odyssey in 1964.
