Large and remarkable, this pair of mural paintings -- perhaps serving as studies for much larger paintings -- were made in connection with the Nobel Prize for Peace by Eugene Savage, arguably America's leading Art Deco muralist in the 1930s and 40s. One painting is dedicated to the Nobel Prize, while the other is entitled "Trust-Laws-Labor-Peace." Both are centered around elegant female figures in Classical garb, one showing her with a sword, vanquishing an octopus while flanked by laborers and symbols of industry. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S.S.
