Radiant and vigorously lyrical, *Suntrack* is a monumental canvas by the American painter Cleve Gray (1918–2004), a key figure in post-war abstraction whose work fuses Abstract Expressionist gesture with the meditative clarity of Color Field painting and an abiding interest in East Asian calligraphy. Spanning nearly seven feet across (frame: 81" x 51"; sight: 80" x 50"), the painting establishes a saturated, lemon-to-saffron ground over which Gray draws a sweeping constellation of marks—looping ribbons of slate blue and pale celadon, plum and aubergine wedges, and smoky swathes of white—all cinched by a decisive armature of charcoal-black brushwork. The result is a composition that feels at once expansive and concentrated: energy flares outward from the central band of activity, while translucent veils of color drift and dissolve into the luminous field like heat mirage on sun-struck air.
Gray’s painterly language is on full display here. He favors broad, loaded strokes and dragged passages that catch the tooth of the canvas, leaving a tactile record of speed and pressure. In places the pigment is scumbled to a dry whisper; elsewhere it pools and stains, allowing the yellow ground to glow through and modulate the overlying gesture. The central dark scaffold behaves almost like notation—calligraphic, rhythmic, and slightly asymmetric—anchoring the picture while allowing the lighter ribbons to circulate with musical freedom. The title *Suntrack* underscores this sensation: the dark trajectory reads as the path of the sun across an atmosphere that brightens and dims around it, the peripheral skeins suggesting refractions, halos, and afterimages.
Executed in 1987, the work belongs to Gray’s mature period, when his canvases grew both in scale and in chromatic daring. By this point he had synthesized decades of looking—from early encounters with Léger and Braque in wartime Paris to his long engagement with Chinese and Japanese ink traditions—into a personal idiom that prized clarity of structure, spiritual calm, and the viewer’s immersive experience. The palette here is characteristically bold yet finely tuned: the yellow ground carries enough warmth to register as light rather than mere color, while the cool blues temper the heat and the purples lend a ceremonial gravity. The black, never dead, is brushed thinly enough to breathe, opening the composition rather than closing it down.
The reverse of the canvas is inscribed by the artist, “Gray – ’87 / *Suntrack* / 50 x 80 / acrylic,” confirming title, date, medium, and dimensions and providing the direct artist’s hand so often sought by collectors of Gray’s work. The painting is presented in a simple contemporary frame that sets off the field without intruding upon it, allowing the surface to carry its full atmospheric charge.

Cleve Gray
Cleve Gray was an American Abstract Expressionist painter. He was born on September 22, 1918, in New York. His works are displayed in various museums including, The Brooklyn Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Smithsonian Institute, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Phillips Collection. Gray died on December 8, 2004, in Hartford.
