Coastal view with Dutch sailing ship. Lacroix de Marseille School France, 1700. Oil on canvas 70 x 100 cm Typical view referable to the figure of Charles-Francois Grenier de la Croix known as Lacroix de Marseille, depicting a coastal foreshortening characterized by an inlet The scene is centered on the landing of the Dutch-flagged sailing ship, nicely drawn in detail with many figures on the deck, on the right in the foreground the lighthouse tower, and on the left a rocky rise on which stands a monastery At the end of the eighteenth century paintings like this one were in great demand, on the push of the Grand Tour by the English, Germans, and French, but the views and panoramas were not necessarily taken from life, very often they were total or partial figments of the imagination of the artists who included in their compositions elements now classical (ruins) now exotic, so for example it was for Lacroix de Marseille, before him his master Claude-Joseph Fernet or after him Vernet and so it is likely to be for this work that proves to be better evidence of an era rather than a place.
