About the Item

An astonishing and important example of Moderne-Mid Century Modern industrial design, this original watercolor rendering of a short-lived Coca-Cola/coffee vending machine was painted by Carl Otto in 1949. The watercolor captures the signature red color of Coca-Cola's packaging, along with wood veneer wrapping the sides and lower part of the machine. Otto was one of America's most important industrial designers in the Art Deco era, having worked in the studio of Raymond Loewy for years. He designed a a new soda fountain for Coca-Cola, as well as product designs for Standard Auto and Dole Deluxe. Not long after this vending machine design, Otto won national awards from the Industrial Designers Institute (IDI) for designing the Schick Model 20 shaver in 1951 and the Edison Voicewriter Dictaphone in 1952. In 1959, Otto designed the Contessa line of furniture -- the epitomy of what we would call Mid Century Modern today -- for Heywood Wakefield. The painting is framed along with Otto's original label for the drawing, and other elements saved from his original presentations to Coca-Cola. Dimensions include the entire framed group; the watercolor is 20 inches high by 11.5 inches wide.
