About the Item

Lot of nine 19th century Indian "Company School" miniature gouache paintings on mica. Shows nine men in different white attire. "Company School" painting was a genre developed under the patronage of the British East India Company, the officials of which were interested in the depiction of the various aspects of exotic and picturesque India. Different casts, trades, occupations, etc. were depicted in series of one character per miniature, and the nine miniatures in this lot seem to belong to that (broad) category. Each picture measures 3.25 x 4.5 inches the frames measure 6 x 8 inches. Frames were added later, some tears and cracks and missing pieces please see pictures. Mica The mica group of sheet silicate (phyllosilicate) minerals includes several closely related materials having nearly perfect basal cleavage. All are monoclinic, with a tendency towards pseudohexagonal crystals, and are similar in chemical composition. The nearly perfect cleavage, which is the most prominent characteristic of mica, is explained by the hexagonal sheet-like arrangement of its atoms. The word mica is derived from the Latin word mica, meaning a crumb, and probably influenced by micare, to glitter.
