An exceptional and vibrant example of early Geometric Abstraction by the notable French Postwar
Contemporary artist Guy Roussille (b. 1944).
Titled Composition and signed and dated 'ROUSSILLE 67,' this bold oil on canvas was created when the artist was just 23, already demonstrating a masterful command of color and form.
The painting is an explosive arrangement of interlocking, sharp edged planar forms that dominate the canvas. It features a dazzling palette of fiery orange, cadmium yellow, and deep crimson, contrasted dynamically with accents of rich blue, bottle green, and black. The complex, fractured composition exhibits strong affinities with Cubism and Orphism, establishing a clear lineage to 20th-century avant garde movements.
This work predates Roussille's formal involvement with the Surrealist-leaning Phases movement (which he joined in 1973), offering a fascinating glimpse into the development of his signature abstract style.

Guy Roussille
Guy Roussille was a French Postwar
Contemporary painter born on January 16, 1944, in Castelculier, Lot-et-Garonne, France. He passed away on May 9, 2023.
Roussille developed a passion for drawing and painting early in life. A pivotal moment in his artistic development came during his adolescence on a trip to Florence, where the discovery of Botticelli's Le Printemps convinced him that he would be a painter. He later attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and, while preferring to maintain his independence from formal movements, his work showed strong affinities with Surrealism.
Composition, dated 1967, is a significant example of his early work, demonstrating a focus on Geometric Abstraction before his later exploration of nature and more explicitly fantastic imagery.
Roussille's career is marked by his connection to the international Phases movement, an artistic group with Surrealist tendencies. While he kept his distance from strict artistic circles, he did participate in the movement's exhibitions and collaborated on the art and literature review Ellébore (1979–1984). He also had an association with the Association des amis de Benjamin Péret, contributing an engraving to one of their publications.
His work is described by his friend Jean Bazin as a "cosmogonic, joyous painting" that blurs the lines between painting and poetry, taking the viewer on a "very long voyage on the agitated oceans of the imagination."
His work has been exhibited at various venues, including the Galerie Pascal Gabert.
