About the Item
A brilliant and vividly-hued view of a traditional Pueblo dance -- the Tablita -- this Art Deco painting by Louise Morris includes several female figures wearing tablitas, or headdresses rich with symbols, as well as a Koshare or Pueblo sacred clown at the center, all gathered to ask for water to nourish the corn in summer and fall. The scene is rich with a palette of oranges, yellows and turquise, and the female faces have a haunting, stylized quality that suggestive of Art Deco painting in the 1930s and 40s. Morris painted in New Mexico over many years after meeting Olive Rush at the Art Students League in New York and serving as her assistant at the Indian School in Santa Fe. Together, they oversaw the painting of murals by Julian Martinez, Awah Tsireh and others. The painting is oil and canvas, and is signed in the lower righthand corner. It is stretched but not framed.

View All"Pueblos", Classic WPA-Era Mural Study with Native Americans for Los Angeles, CA
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This classic example of WPA-period mural painting, executed by Verona Burkhardt for the Immigration and Naturalization Center in Los Angeles, depicts five Pueblo Indians in the foreground and a magnificent landscape of canyons and Pueblo dwellings in the background. This served as a study for one of five large canvases she delivered to California in 1941 or 1942, but the building was cordoned off due to America's entrance into World War II. Burkhardt (or Burkhard) was the daughter of two important artists and was introduced to painting and crafts at an early age. In her prime, she won seven U.S. Government mural commissions in national competitions for buildings in Wyoming, Montana, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. She settled in Grand Junction...
