Elisabeth Karlinsky (born May 19, 1904, in Kasten, Lower Austria; died October 13, 1994, in Græsted, Denmark) was an Austrian-Danish painter and artist.
Wife of the famouse danish painter and author, Hans Scherfig.
Elisabeth Karlinsky is represented as part of the permanent collection at National Gallery of Denmark (SMK).
Karlinsky studied from 1921 to 1927 at the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Franz Čižek, Rudolf von Larisch, Rosalia Rothansl, Viktor Schufinsky, and Bertold Löffler. In 1925, she participated in the international art exhibition in Paris, and in 1926 in the international exhibition of modern artistic writing at the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna. In 1926, she received the Lobmeyr Prize for her “kinetic glass window,” traveled for the first time to Paris, and worked with Robert Haas’ “Officina Vindobonensis.”
From 1928, Karlinsky taught as a substitute for Erika Giovanna Klien at the Elizabeth Duncan School at Schloss Kleßheim in Salzburg and from September 1928 at the Walden School in New York. In New York, she took part in exhibitions at the Civic Club and designed displays for the department stores Macy’s and Gimbel. In 1931, she moved to Copenhagen, where she married the author and painter Hans Scherfig. In 1932, she held her first exhibition in Denmark, regularly participated from 1935/1936 in the exhibitions of the artist association “Corner,” and worked as a book and magazine illustrator. In 1953, she created the decorations for the World Women’s Congress in Copenhagen.
