It's extremely rare to have a representation of the boat workshops of the 19th Century. Dimensions of the panel : 68,5 x 39 cm Dimensions with the frame : 84 x 56 cm Artist exhibited in France : at the Daubigny Museum in Auvers-sur-Oise, at the Fine Arts Museum in Brest, at the Fine Arts Museum in Rouen, at the Gallé-Juillet Museum in Creil, at the Evreux Museum in Evreux, at the Grenoble Museum in Grenoble, at the Musée des Pêcheries in Dieppe. The boat workshop "Le Botin" If the most famous boat-workshop is undoubtedly that of Claude Monet, the first boat-workshop is however the one created in 1856 by the artist's father, Charles-François Daubigny. The father was the captain of the boat and Karl, his son, played the role of ship's boy. As for Camille Corot, a close friend of the two painters, if he did not go on board, he painted them from time to time from the shore, and received the honorary title of honorary admiral. Once the boat was moored, Karl Daubigny tells us that they used a small boat called "Zigzag" to search for a motif. With this boat, the Daubigny father and son and their friends made real cruises on the Seine and painted the surrounding landscapes. Charles-Pierre Daubigny known as Karl Daubigny was born in Paris on June 9, 1846. Son of the painter and engraver, Charles-François Daubigny, attached to the Barbizon School, it was his father who trained him in painting. He showed a certain talent at a very young age and exhibited at the Salon, as early as 1863, (he was barely 17 years old!) with two landscapes of Auvers-sur-Oise. In order to capture the most beautiful views from the Seine, he had a boat-studio built called "Le Botin" and made his "first steps" there, painting continuously and working on his colorist's gifts by letting himself go along the water from Ile-Adam, Conflans, to Bonnières, to Les Andelys, even to Pont-de-l'Arche. The capricious landscapes of the riverbank are then faithfully reflected on the prestigious sketches of the young painter. To free himself from the heavy influence of his father, he chose to treat rustic subjects, maritime scenes with detailed figures and thus left to discover Brittany. He came back from this first trip with the "Vanneuses de Kérity" (Finistère), a painting that earned him a medal at the 1868 Salon. He was then twenty-two years old. Throughout his life he exhibited regularly at the Salon, and if he continued to use his boat-studio, he also built a house with a large studio in Auvers-sur-Oise where he could regularly gather his friends such as Oudinot, Corot, Daumier. It was in Auvers-sur-Oise that he died on May 23, 1886. He was buried in Paris in the famous Père-Lachaise cemetery. Like his father (who played a key role in the evolution of landscape painting during the 19th century and influenced the painters Eugène Boudin and Jongkind), Karl Daubigny was known and recognized above all as a landscape painter whose work concentrated mainly on views of the forest of Fontainebleau and Normandy, notably Trouville, Dieppe, Honfleur, La Ferme Saint Siméon, the Normandy coastline...
