About the Item
A superb example of American allegorical painting celebrating the nation's trade and commerce, this gorgeous, high energy view of a major port, bustling with sailing ships, steam ships, trains and men at work, is dominated by the figure of a modern Mercury, arms outstretched in joyous approbation. A group of men in the lower left are shown in the act of creating wood crates and carrying goods toward the docks, and the long lines of freight cars pulled by steam engines are clearly carrying goods to and from the ships docked nearby. Behind the entire scene is a glimpse of the globe, all glowing in tones of coral and aquamarine. The painter, Charles Winter, is known for his stylized Art Deco paintings as well as color-infused Impressionist works, all highly accomplished. This painting is oil on canvas (dimensions include frame).
