About the Item
Dramatically illustrating the legend that says that St. Martin of Tours used his sword to divide his cloak and share it with a naked beggar, this large and striking Art Deco painting depicts St. Martin riding a pale gray horse, with the beggar standing beside him, in the midst of a dark forest with starlit sky overhead. The two figures are accompanied by a running hound, and overhead a pair of geese are flying in the same direction. The painter was Ernst Georg Martin Hildebrand, who may have felt compelled to leave Germany when the Nazi regime started to persecute artists they labeled "degenerate." He moved to Sweden, married a local woman and raised a family there. Although Hildebrand was known for his landscapes, cityscapes and mainstream work, he also produced a number of homoerotic drawings in the 1940s. The medium is oil on canvas.
