About the Item

Earl Collins (American, 1925-1992) oil on canvas. Clipper northern eagle, signed lower right "Earl Collins." This is a dramatic painting of a sharp lined American clipper, built for speed, sailing the high seas under full sail with another tall ship riding the trade wind close behind. The fully rigged ship has three masts and a finely drawn square rig - all done in precise detail. This lively nautical painting captures the essence of the golden age of sail the fresh breeze, the furled sails, the choppy waves, the ships sailing close to the wind. The lower stretcher bar is inscribed "Clipper 'Northern Eagle' East Boston 1854,” built by shipwright Andrew Burnham and launched in April of 1854. Its original port was Boston, but it was transferred to Newburyport when the ship was acquired by a new owner. In September 1859 it caught fire in Esquimalt Harbor, south of Vancouver, while enroute to Puget Sound. For collectors passionate about maritime works, this is a rather striking piece with great presence, the deep cobalt and excellent detailing throughout set against a vibrant and bright sky gives depth and richness to an interior. Remaining in outstanding unrestored condition, it is presentation-ready for the study or living room. Measurements: [framed] 36 5/8” H x 47” W x 1 7/8” D; [canvas] 30” H x 40” W. Condition report: Original lining. Light craquelure, light impressions on left side (facing) of canvas, tiny spot of touch up (under UV) in water, dark point in sky. Minor dings/wear to frame.
