About the Item

A fine 17th century Flemish oil painting on copper depicting the Virgin Mary in a radiant vision of the Immaculate Conception, surrounded by a lavish garland of flowers including tulips, roses, anemones, and chrysanthemums. Above her hovers the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, illuminating the scene with divine light. Paintings of this type were highly characteristic of the Flemish Baroque, often created in Antwerp in the circle of Daniel Seghers and Jan Brueghel the Elder, where flower painters and figure painters collaborated to produce devotional masterpieces on copper panels. The smooth copper surface allowed for the brilliant, luminous colors and fine detailing visible here. The painting is presented in a later 19th-century giltwood frame that complements the subject beautifully. Both frame and painting show small areas of wear and minor losses consistent with age, but the overall condition is very good and stable.
