Jean Lafon was born into a family of artists. He was the son of the history and church painter François Lafon and grandson of the history painter Jacques-Emile Lafon. To avoid being confused with his father, he called himself Keuleyan-Lafon or just Keuleyan and worked exclusively as a landscape and marine painter. He specialized in picturesque sunsets by the sea and coasts in the moonlight. His paintings hang in French museums and are regularly traded. They often depict the bizarre coast near
Agay on the Côte d'Azur with its red rocks, which was painted by all the great Impressionists such as Monet, Guillaumin and Valtat. The red of the rocks is shown to its best advantage in this painting. After the First World War and the death of his father, the artist signed his paintings Jean Lafon again. The present picture was probably painted in the 1920s.

Jean Lafon wurde in eine Künstlerfamilie hineingeboren. Er war der Sohn des Historien- und Kirchenmalers François Lafons und Enkel des Historienmalers Jacques-Emile Lafon. Um nicht mit seinem Vater verwechselt zu werden, nannte er sich Keuleyan-Lafon oder nur Keuleyan undarbeitete
ausschließlich als Landschafts- und Marinemaler. Spezialisiert war er auf malerische
Sonnenuntergänge am Meer und Küsten im Mondlicht. Seine Gemälde hängen in französischen
Museen und werden regelmäßig gehandelt. Häufig zeigen sie, wie auch das vorliegende, die bizarre
Küste bei Agay an der Côte d’Azur mit ihren roten Felsen, die von allen großen Impressionisten wie
Monet, Guillaumin, Valtat gemalt wurde. Auf dem vorliegenden Bild kommt das Rot der Felsen gut zur Geltung. Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg und dem Tod seines Vaters signierte der Künstler seine Gemälde wieder Jean Lafon. Das vorliegende Bild dürfte in den 1920er Jahren gemalt worden sein.
