About the Item

Decorate a lady’s office, study, or bedroom with this elegant antique oil on canvas painting. Created in Hungary circa 1920 and set in its original carved giltwood frame, the composition titled “Portrait of a Girl in a Hat” depicts a young woman leaning gracefully on an ornately carved chair, her head tilted in quiet reflection. Dressed in a teal gown with a feathered bonnet and ivory shawl, she embodies the delicate romanticism and soft palette characteristic of the Art Nouveau period. The painting is signed in the lower right corner by Vilmos Nagy (1874–1953), a Hungarian portrait and genre painter who studied under Károly Lotz at the Budapest Mintarajziskola and exhibited regularly at the Hungarian Hall of Art. Influenced by his time in Paris and the Nagybánya artist colony, Nagy was known for his refined brushwork, expressive faces, and atmospheric use of light. The artwork is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and retains a rich palette of harmonious greens, creams, and rose tones. Measures: 30.75” W x 39.25” H.
