About the Item
Our enamel plaque on copper after the French enamelier, Edouard Bernard Debat-Ponsan (1847-1913) depicts Truth Emerging from the Well, Vérité sortant du puits. Plaque measures approximately 6 by 9 inches and the gilt bronze frame 10 1/2 by 15 1/2 inches.
Signature Depuis (from) E. Debat-Ponsan with the monogram of the enameller above that appears to read FR (or RF).
The artist was a student of Cabanel and was respected as a portraitist of wealthy patrons in Paris, plus painted scenes from history and peasant life. He exhibited his allegorical painting Vérité sortant du puits (Truth coming out of the well) at the 1898 Salon. The subject comes from the aphorism of the Greek pre-Socratic philosopher, Democritus (460 – c.?370 BC), who wrote, Of truth we know nothing, for truth is in a well. His son, Jacques Debat-Ponsan, won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1912.
