About the Item
Brilliantly conceived and executed, in vivid shades of pink, pale blue, slate green and black, this pair of Mid Century paintings bring life, humor and color to scenes of circus life. The ringmaster is introducing a pair of elephants to the center ring, while the seals are about to enjoy a fish dinner brought by a haughty waiter. The paintings are rather astonishing because the artist -- Jerome Aidlin -- was only 19 when he painted them. Although the artist would later be known for his abstracted sculptures, these early works show his proficiency in painting; he clearly could have made a career in animation or illustration art if he had chosen to do so. The paintings are gouache on paper, and are both signed and dated.
