About the Item

Emilian school, 18th century Madonna and Child Oil on panel, 45 x 24.5 cm Framed, 62 x 44 cm This Madonnai Enthroned with Child fits into the context of the 16th-century Emilian tradition, a strand referred to by Antonio Allegri known as Correggio (1489 - 1534)-It is to the latter that the unknown author of this canvas must refer. Specifically reminiscent of Correggio's influence is the background, which unfolds according to concentric light beams, more orange outward and increasingly golden inward. This gradient of colors, devised by Correggio for the strikingly illusionistic-perspective and scenic frescoes in the dome of St. John the Evangelist in Parma, allows the spiritual aspect of the characters, positioned on a cloud carried to heaven by cherubim, to be enhanced. The virgin's head almost touches the highest edge of the canvas, adding the idea of upward motion to the composition. Correggio's lesson is also absorbed in the treatment of the Madonna's face, softened by her downward gaze but also by the composed tenderness of her embrace with her son and the luministic effects of the drapery and cloud. The composition can be compared with Correggio's The Madonna of St. Sebastian at the Gemaldegalerie in Dresden, executed in 1524, and with The Madonna in Glory by Benvenuto Tisi known as Il Garofalo (1476 or 1481 -1559), executed between 1510 and 1520, now in the National Gallery in Parma. The figurative model of this Madonna and Child in Glory can also be found in numerous more recent examples, although variations are not lacking, such as the presence of the saints assisting the Virgin's ascent to heaven. More recent examples of the maintenance of this iconography can be found, again in the Emilia area, in artists such as Guercino(1591-1666) with the Madonna and Child in Glory, now in the National Gallery in Parma.
