English signed and dated original maritime oil painting on canvas "The Working Harbor". This scene of a working harbor, probably in Kent, is signed and dated: JOHN WILSON (18)70. This action packed scene with multiple craft plying the waters, looked over and framed by a sturdy lighthouse on the right and tall cliffs on the left, portends a good day. The ocean has a chop to it, but there are no ominous storm clouds, just puffy white fair weather clouds scudding across the sky. This painting has recently been conserved, relined, cleaned and reframed so it is ready to be displayed and enjoyed. Dated 1870. 27" wide x 18 3/4" high JOHN JAMES WILSON (1818-1875) was born in 1818, the son of famous Scottish marine artist John H. Wilson. He received instruction from his father and became highly regarded, first as a landscape artist and later as a fine marine artist. He lived in London until 1847 when he left for Redhill in Surrey. Following that move from the family home, he exhibited almost exclusively marine paintings. He moved from Redhill, eventually settling in the Kentish seaside resort of Folkestone, south of Dover. He exhibited over 500 oils and watercolors in London, as well as in Dublin, Glasgow and Edinburgh. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, the British Institution, Royal Academy (London), Royal Hibernian Academy (Dublin), Royal Glasgow Institute and the Royal Scottish Academy. His works are widely held by museums and collectors on both sides of the Atlantic, including at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England and the Folkestone Art Gallery.

Small sailing ships can be seen in the distance. Climbing the dunes is a shepherdess and her small flock of sheep grazing on meagre offerings along the dunes. A young couple can also be seen sitting on the beach in the background. The painting is in its original carved and gilded frame. Signed James Webb and dated 18_7 on the bottom right hand corner of the canvas. Why the artist omitted the "decade" digit and put an underscore instead is a mystery.
