About the Item
A large scale of a nude exotic woman.
Possibly an Indonesian woman because of the colonial past of the Netherlands with Indonesia.
Oil on hardboard signed Gerard Westerman, 1880-1971.
Gerardus Bernardus Josephus Westermann Leeuwarden, December 25, 1880 - Amsterdam, February 2, 1971 was a Dutch painter.
Westermann was a student of Johannes Hendricus Jurres and at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He painted, made watercolors and drew. His subjects were portraits, figures, figure representations, horses and still lifes.
With his horse painting he won a bronze medal at the art competitions at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in the category watercolor and drawings.
Between 1918 and 1945 he was a teacher at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. His students were Leo Visser and Jan Battermann. His son Bert (philosopher, economist and art historian) was married to actress Riek Schagen.
Westerman also worked under the pseudonym Johs. Labasky.
