About the Item
Expressionist painting of a woman by Norman Mejia (1938-2012). The painting is oil on canvas. This painting is dated 1965 the same year he won the National Painting Award at the Bogota Museum of Modern Art. His winning painting, Horrible Mujer Castigadora, was very controversial and a great departure from the art in Colombia at the time. Art critic Marta Traba was a champion of his work. He lived in New York, Madrid and Paris, but eventually returned to Colombia. He stayed away from public life and did not seem interested in selling his work. When he passed he left behind 5,000 paintings in his home. There is a remnant of what may be a gallery label on the back. The sight dimensions are 14 1/2" x 19 1/2". Provenance is available for this piece.
