About the Item
Philadelphia artist Emlen Etting returned again and again to the theme of Icarus Falling, in part because it gave him an opportunity to depict the nude male in motion. This is the finest painting with the Icarus theme that we have seen, and dates to 1946, just after World War II had ended. Etting exhibited, over a long lifetime of painting, in more than 30 one-man and multiple-artist shows in Philadelphia, New York, Paris and elsewhere. He traveled in a prestigious circle of artists, writers and wealthy clients, and his works were purchased by museums and collectors such as Walter Annenberg, Helen Hayes and Mary Clark Rockefeller. The painting is oil on canvas, and is inscribed with the title and date on the stretcher. Dimensions include the gold frame; visible painting is 20 inches high by 24 inches wide.
