About the Item
This classic, striking example of Art Deco painting, highly influenced by Cubism, depicts a fashionable woman expressed in tones of purplish blue and taupe, her head raised upwards, accompanied by the elements of a modern bar, including a soda siphon, glass and an orange. The painter was Alexander Wilhelm de Beauclair, a German-born artist who spent much of his artistic life at the Monte Verità colony in Ascona, Switzerland. There he ran a painting school and co-founded the German-language newspaper Südschweiz , published today as the Ticino Newspaper. Most of his known paintings are much more traditional, so this very modern watercolor is a rare exception. The painting is on heavy paper, and is signed in the lower righthand corner.
