About the Item

Framed Oil Painting on Canvas by Colin Graeme (1858-1910) dated 1902 is a stunning work, considered by art historians to be definitive of the genre. Although the focus is on the horse and dogs depicted in the composition, the artist's attention to the landscape and even a flock of birds creates a mesmerizing backdrop. The innocence of the animals is immediately obvious, with the dogs appearing to be waiting for their master who is just inside the thatched cottage. The burdens on the horse and the tree struggling against Mother Nature taking center stage in the background all testify to the rigors of rural life. Graeme was born Colin Graeme Roe in 1858, in Argyle Scotland, later moving to the Sheffield region. Some records indicate he was the son of artist Robert Henry Roe. His early works were signed with his full name, but apparently there was a falling out in the family after which Graeme dropped his family name from his signature. This work was performed only eight years before his passing. Professionally restored by our expert in-house staff.
