About the Item

Francesco FRACANZANO (Monopoli 1612 - Naples 1656) "San Peter " oil on canvas 92 x 67.5 cm good conditions Francesco Fracanzano (Monopoli, 1612 - Naples, 1656), Italian painter active in Naples during the Baroque era. Higo of the late painter Alessandro Fracanzano and brother of Cesare, also a painter, together with whom he moved to Naples in 1622 to join José de Ribera's workshop. In 1632 I contracted marriage with Giovanna, the sister of his colleague Salvator Rosa. His first works are poorly known: they are attributed to a series of medium-sized figures, executed with a dense brushstroke and a palette of dark colors, typically tenebrist. These works are in a direct relationship with several artists from the circle closest to Ribera, such as Juan Dò (identifiable as known by the name of Maestro del Anuncio a los Pastores). For some years Fracanzano shared a workshop with his brother Rosa and Aniello Falcone, specialized in battle scenes. In 1635 he first marched to Rome, but Francesco continued his collaboration with Falcone. The master work of Francesco Fracanzano is two lies with Historias de la Vida de San Gregorio Armeno (1635) in the Neapolitan church of the same name. Later, his art would partially move away from the more clearly dark influence to incorporate luminous effects into his painting, which would obviously brighten his palette. Painter with a more powerful style than his brother, with a more classical style. His son, Michelangelo Fracanzano, was also a painter, although no work by his brother has reached the present day.
