Wax takes on a memory value, creates atmosphere that surrounds and soften everything: an oneiric vision which fixes a moment, a glimpse, a time frame from which nothing can move or escape. The memory of something or somebody is perpetually fixed in the work, no details are relevant, only the impression, the instant that passed but still has left feelings, emotions, all still alive and contained within the frames of the work itself.
“Cross me in 13” is the title of the solo show curated by Gabriella Serusi, with which Francesco Sena debuted at the Gagliari Art System in 2006.
Since then Sena has participated in some of the most important international fairs and in collective exhibitions from Beijing to Miami.
Sena is a story teller. His works are the stop frame of a dream or a nightmare. He uses technique that has nothing to do with video or comics. In fact each of his artwork is a result of a meticulous preparation, that would match with still life procedures. Perhaps, also thanks to the difference between the technique and the narration, we remain nearly hypnotized by these works, as if by the scene of a thriller.
Sena uses wax as main material, which gives a special light to his works, like a lightbox.
Francesco Sena was born in Avellino in 1966, but has lived and worked in Turin for years.
The artist has long favored the almost exclusive use of wax, which in his work takes on a value of memory, from which images spread over various levels are born, more similar to bas-reliefs than to actual paintings. Essential elements of his research are the body and the landscape, equally captured and as if imprisoned under a layer of wax, white or black. A stratification that envelops the figures like a fog and partially hides them from the observer, giving the impression of glimpsing ghosts, dark landscapes, dreamlike visions.
