This Large Oil on Canvas ‘Bedouin Oasis’ by Frederick Goodall (UK) 1822-1904 is a stunning painting and in the original gilt frame. Last quarter of the Nineteenth Century.

Frederick Goodall is an artist of significant fame and his works are exhibited in some of the most important Art Galleries and Museums in the world. Goodall visited Egypt twice; in 1858 and again in 1870, both times travelling and camping with Bedouin tribesmen. On his second visit in 1870, he lived at Saqqara, near the Pyramids with the aim of directly observing Bedouin lifestyles. After his return to England (when this painting was executed in 1877), Goodall painted some beautiful Egyptian themed paintings and this is one. The Egyptian theme was prominent in his work, with 170 paintings being exhibited at the Royal Academy over 46 years.

After having exhibited numerous works at the Royal Academy and winning awards, Goodall traveled to Egypt 1858 and again in 1870.
He worked throughout his life, with the Egyptian scenes featuring prominently. His work was highly sought after and appreciated - especially his plein-air work from his adventurous travels to Egypt. He accumulated a considerable amount of wealth and more importantly died as a highly respected artist.

Fluidly painted, this vibrant oil on board depicts a dusty Orientalist scene. Four Bedouin ride camels alongside a flurry of goats, carrying lambs and hens in saddlebags. Other figures clothed in Middle Eastern garments walk with them, and the busy scene fades into a dusty, evening landscape. The colour palette is vibrant and hued with dusky pinks and oranges, giving the impression that these Bedouin are returning back to camp. The cropped composition also gives a dynamic feel to the picture: a glance into early 20th Century desert life.
