About the Item
18th century, pair of French Louis XVI oil on canvas paintings with trompe l’œil, attributable to Piat Joseph Sauvage (Tournai, 1744–1818)
Size: cm H 94 x L 132 each
The pair of oil on canvas paintings represents a trompe l'oeil with putti games. These are grisaille paintings, that is monochrome, that simulate marble bas-reliefs with figures of putti intent on playing with a goat in open spaces.
Of good pictorial quality, these paintings represent the Louis XVI taste spread in the last quarter of the 18th century. They have obvious stylistic proximity to the works of the Flemish painter, and active in France, to Piat Joseph Sauvage (Tournai, 1744–1818), in which it is found in a very similar fresh and fast stretch, as well as the type of chiaroscuro, extremely volumetric.
This type of painting was inserted inside of boiserie in important noble palaces with the intent to simulate marble sculptures and bas-reliefs. They are characterized by their high decorative quality and are particularly suitable for fine furnishings in modern or antique environments, thanks to their chromatic characteristics, very clear and bright and their three-dimensional nature.
Artistic historical studies are underway in order to better delineate the figure of the author and the historical context in which the paintings were made. Excellent state of conservation.

18th Century, Pair of Italian Neoclassical Grisaille Tempera on Paper Paintings
This pair of tempera paintings on paper, was made in Piedmont, Italy, in the neoclassical era, towards the end of the eighteenth century. Each painting, with a blue grey background, is decorated with elements reminiscent of the grotesques, characteristic of neoclassicism, grisaille paintings, or with the use of the color of white and gray to simulate sculptures in bas-relief in marble or stucco.
At the center of each painting stands a classic vase decorated with garlands and frames with vegetable elements, taken with goat heads with long horns. The vase is adorned with a floral decoration topped by a long vertical element that simulates a stand. Along the axis are woven garlands foliated in the center of which are represented ovoid bas-reliefs. The base of the lift, of classical and circular taste, supports two swans with outstretched wings and ends with a small circular podgy element. In the lower part of the vase is depicted a horizontal element that supports a precious folded fabric, decorated with filigree and trimmings at the edges, behind which protrudes a flowered garland.
These two particular paintings are very decorative and elegant and are suitable to be exhibited alongside other works in any environment, also in boiserie. Very beautiful in copy, interspersed with other decorative objects, placed above seats, consoles, drawers, in living rooms, studies, bedrooms, corridors and entrances. Conceptually very modern, and suitable for both antique and contemporary furniture.
In good condition, the paintings are presented using wooden panels...
