About the Item
French oil on canvas portrait of a man c. 1800. The bourgeois gent depicted here displays the cliched hand-in-waistcoat mannerism of the 18th and early 19th century. He’s wearing what appears to be rouge. That and his powdered wig place him in the *ancien regime* of Louis XVI, but he may be the kind of old-timer who refuses to relinquish an *outre* style to which he was accustomed, and so based on the costume and style he could date from as late as c. 1810. The canvas is in unrestored condition typical of 220-year-old canvases, with small punctures and scratches. The frame is modern.
