The work that we can observe here falls within the genre of animal painting, which as early as the 17th century was able to carve out its own role within the European art scene; in this period, in fact, there were many Nordic artists, especially Flemish, who specialized in the depiction of animals, often including them in paintings that responded to different genres, such as still or living nature, but which included in their subjects animal figures made with extreme meticulousness. Attention to real data, study of anatomical details, early interest in animal and plant biology, made explicit through studies and the drawings of animals and plants for inclusion in scientific books and manuals, and the patrons' taste for this work allowed this genre of painting to proliferate, which often saw specialized artists collaborate with colleagues accustomed to painting other subjects, producing details of animals or still lifes in the paintings of other painters: one example above all is the association between Frans Snyders, among the first Flemish animal painters, and Peter Paul Rubens. The Flemish tradition also had a substantial impact in neighboring France, whose painters during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries studied the models of the Flemish and frequented their workshops as their direct pupils: among them we can mention Alexandre-François Desportes (1661-1743), Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811) and Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755). The French tradition for these subjects is configured within animalier painting, which experiences a period of particular good fortune thanks to several factors such as the growing attention of artists with respect to the representation of nature, as well as the emergence, in the span between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, of biology and zoology as scientific disciplines cause the genre to go against a process of rapid evolution; moreover, it is necessary to remember how the colonial expansion of the French state led to the discovery of new animal species, which became subjects of great fascination for artists. The latter point allows us to consider with greater specificity the lion, which is depicted here lying in the midst of a dense thicket from which we can only make out a small corner of the horizon. Despite the relaxed pose, the gaze is intense and guarded, as if the feline is ready to react readily toward the viewer, who can illusorily make contact with the animal given the close cut and placement in the foreground. The painting is set in the 18th century, a period when other French artists decided to depict exotic animals within their works, including, indeed, lions, a symbol of strength and majesty. Moreover, the feline exhibited here proves to be a forerunner of the future lions made by great French masters of the 19th century such as Théodore Géricault, Eugène Delacroix, and Antoine-Louis Barye, who was also known for sculptures as well as paintings of animalier type. Inscriptions with the call sign "M Lepescheux" and the art dealer's label "Palette d'or" confirm the painting's French origin.
