About the Item
Painted by Horatio Nelson Poole, famed for his scenes of Hawaii and California, this brilliantly-hued gouache shows a group of women picking fruit, likely oranges or lemons, their baskets laden from their labors. Poole uses a saturated palette of pumpkin, lime green, violet and slate blue, and the group of women form a kind of frieze along the lower edge of the painting. The artist worked as a newspaper illustrator for the Pacific Commercial Advertiser, and exhibited with the Hawaiian Society of Artists. Later he moved to San Francisco to teach at the California School of Fine Arts and the University of California, Berkeley. He also participated in the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s. (Dimensions include matte and frame.)
