About the Item
Classic and beautiful examples of Art Deco allegorical painting, this pair of mural studies depicts nude mermaid figures, each holding symbols of the fruits of land and sea. One is holding ears of corn and other produce from the earth, while the other is holding a strand of pearls and a cornucopia with coral and other living things from the ocean. Both figures are surrounded by the undulating waves of the ocean in a lovely blue. The paintings are by Adelaide Briggs and date to the years shortly after her studies at Cornell University, probably in the late 1930s or early 1940s. Later, Briggs went on to pursue an important and successful career as a painter. The media are pencil and watercolor on pale paper.
