About the Item
The miniature etching on paper depicts a landscape of Venice with a view of Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, with gondolas and small boats passing by. The etching is signed by the artist in pencil on the lower margin.
The etching is framed with wide matting in ebonized wooden frame; the backing has the original frame shop sticker attached, "Kodak's Picture Frames Novelties Hobbs

George Taylor Plowman (1869–1932) was an American artist and architect, one of America's best-known etchers of the early 20th century, renowned for his architectural etchings. Plowman authored Etchings and Other Graphic Arts in 1914 and Manual of Etching in 1924. Plowman started his career as an architect. Upon graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1892, Plowman assisted D. H. Burnham with constructing many buildings for the World's Fair in Chicago. During the following years, George Plowman received numerous commissions for building both in France and the United States. Plowman traveled extensively throughout Europe, including England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and France, studying and sketching. Plowman studied art and architecture in Minneapolis, MN, where he studied with the painter Douglas Volk (1856-1935) in his life drawing classes at the Minneapolis School of Art. He attended a life drawing courses at the Chicago Art Institute, 1893, and in San Francisco during his time in the Bay Area, c. 1904-1911. In 1910 he studied with Eric L. Pape (1870-1938) in Boston. During his travels in Europe, he enrolled in life-drawing classes in Paris and Berlin and at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London, as well as in École Nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, in 1893-1894; in 1894, he took a sketching tour throughout England, France and Italy. He also studied at Engraving School of the Royal College of Art, South Kensington, London, under the eminent practician, Sir Frank Short, R.A., P.R.E.,(1857-1945), from 1911 to 1913.
George T. Plowman was a member of the New York Society of Etchers, the Salmagundi Club, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Print Makers' Society of California, the Boston Society of Etchers, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, the California Society of Etchers, the California Printmakers, the Society of American Etchers, and a Fellow at the Royal Society of the Arts. Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
