Gerhard Graf - A Canal in Hamburg, 1920s. Oil on canvas. Original frame. Signed: "Gerhard Graf". Gerhard Graf (1883-1958) was a German naturalist painter and art teacher. Graf was born in Berlin in 1883 as the son of court photographer Heinrich Graf. In 1906 he passed the drawing teacher examination at the renowned Königliche Kunstschule in Berlin and from 1907 worked as a teacher for art. From 1918 Graf travelled through Europe for study purposes. From 1923 he increasingly accepted orders from industry. He acquired a plot of land in Werder (Havel) on Lake Plessow and built the Graf country house. In 1927 he began his activities at the Grunewald-Gymnasium in Berlin as a student councillor. In the same year he conducted a study trip to the USA on behalf of North German Lloyd. From 1932 his country house was extended and supplemented by his own studio. Gerhard Graf retired in 1938 and was admitted to the Chamber of Artists in 1945. In 1948 he gave up his residence in Werder and moved to West Berlin, while his two daughters emigrated to Sweden. Graf died in 1958 and was buried at the cemetery in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. Graf lived in Werder (Havel) from 1926 to 1948. At that time he chose the rather rural area at Lake Plessow as his place to live and work. His pictorial repertoire includes depictions of major cities in Europe and North America as well as landscapes depicting the rural surroundings of Werder. Among his preferred painting techniques were oil paint and gouache painting. His country house was a popular meeting place for artists and creative minds. Guests included the artists George Grosz (1893-1959), Walter Trier (1890-1951), the painter, art teacher, art writer and pacifist Annot (1894-1981), the comedians Carl Napp (1890-1957) and Bruno Fritz (1900-1984).
