About the Item

Hermann Brücke (German, Berlin 1830 – Pisa, Italy 1871) “Neapolitan Fishing Family”, 1863 Oil on canvas Framed and relined Dimensions (with frame): 45" H × 49.5" W Signed and dated lower right: H. Brücke 1863 A charming and meticulously executed genre painting depicting a Neapolitan fishing family in a sunlit coastal setting. The work demonstrates Brücke’s keen observation of everyday life, his sensitive handling of figures, and his mastery of color and light, which reflects the influence of both German academic training and Italian plein-air study. Artist Biography: Hermann Brücke was the son of Johann Gottfried Brücke, a Berlin-based drawing teacher, portraitist, and history painter, and nephew of Wilhelm Brücke, a landscape and architectural painter. He received his initial artistic training from his father, and later studied at the Berlin Academy (1847–1849), with Paul Delaroche in Paris, and Louis Gallait in Brussels. From 1856 to 1861, Brücke resided in Rome, where he was a member of the German Art Association and participated in the Cervarofest of 1857, an assembly of German-speaking artists in the city. He later worked in Berlin, serving as a board member of the Berlin Artists’ Association, producing portraits, history, and genre paintings noted for their technical skill and expressive realism.
