About the Item
Brilliantly executed in tones of cobalt and red to catch the eye, this original painting was made for a proposed crate label advertising Giant lettuce in the 1940s. At a time when California was becoming the nation's agricultural powerhouse, growing and shipping enormous amounts of produce for kitchens across America, the Giant brand was established by the Growers Produce Dispatch in Salinas, California. The company worked with printing firms to produce labels for the crates of produce it sold. The painting was probably made by a staff artist at the Western Lithograph Company in Los Angeles. This proposed label may not have been printed, but other labels promoting the Giant line were made in the 1940s, probably printed by Western Lithograph.
