(see pics) Provenance: Pierulli family (Milano) private collection. Offered framed BIO Giuseppe Solenghi was born in Milan in 1879. He began his studies at the Brera Academy at a very young age (1892-1895), following the perspective courses of Giuseppe Mentessi, a painter born into a poor family and a leading exponent, together with Pellizza da Volpedo, Longoni, and Morbelli, of the group of painters who supported socially committed art. The developments in the representation of the city of Milan in the 19th century occurred above all with the Scapigliatura. Giuseppe Mentessi (Ferrara 1857 - Milan 1931) was introduced by Gaetano Previati to the progressive and bohemian environment of the Milanese Scapigliatura. A participant in Filippo Turati's socialist ideals, the artist never forgot his humble origins and conceived the practice and teaching of art as a mission at the service of humanity. In this sense, Mentessi 's elegiac painting is always close to the humble. Later he became a student of Cesare Tallone, a master much loved by all his students and an artist who enjoyed unanimous acclaim from critics, the public, and the artistic community for his commitment, dedication, and talent. After completing his training courses he devoted himself for a few years to the demanding execution of miniatures (1895-1900) and only after this experience and thanks to his friendship with Leonardo Bazzaro, another leading painter of the Lombard nineteenth century, Solenghi approached figurative painting with urban views and romantic landscapes. Among his favorite subjects, there is obviously Milan, his city, his love. Solenghi painted Milan with a sweetness and delicacy that shines through in all his works. His famous snowfalls are small masterpieces imbued with sentiment and calm. His paintings are simply spectacular and arouse emotions in every spectator. He devoted himself to naturalistic landscapes, painting woods, hills, Lake Como, and other Lombard panoramas and, like Bazzaro, he loved to represent the lagoon of Chioggia. In his repertoire, however, we also find many portraits, especially those of the celebrities of the opera singing of the time engaged in the glittering performances of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Often the protagonists of the paintings were represented in their stage clothes. Solenghi became one of the protagonists of the artistic life of Milan. He was an exceptional and flexible painter: he moved easily from oil painting to pastels to watercolors without ever showing insecurity or difficulty in execution. He was the protagonist of many art events and was exhibited at the Permanete and actively participated in the events organized by the association Famiglia Artistica Milanese, which has still been operating in Milan since 1873. A large posthumous exhibition of his works was set up in 1947 at the Galleria Boito in Milan. Giuseppe Solenghi is a Milanese painter who needs little introduction for those in the sector or simply passionate about good nineteenth-century Italian painting.
