About the Item
This evocative gouache portrait by Matthew William Boyhan captures a young man in a moment of deep contemplation. The artist’s use of muted yet warm colors highlights the subject's youthful vitality and emotional intensity. The painting’s textured strokes and the figure’s forward gaze give it a dynamic and modern appeal, even as it remains deeply rooted in classical portrait techniques. The painting is beautifully framed in dark wood, enhancing its rich tones.
Studying under painter Charles Woodbury, and later at the Boston Museum School of Fine Art, Boyhan was the youngest winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He continued practicing in the states, where he taught painting at St. Marks School in Southboro, Massachusetts for many years.
