About the Item
A year after André Margat received a gold medal for his lacquerwork at the Exposition Universelle of 1937, the artist painted this beautiful and expressive depiction of a guinea baboon, native to Guinea, Senegal, Gambia and Mauritania in West Africa. Margat exhibted at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon des Artistes Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne as a young artist, but he became increasingly interested in lacquerwork, parallel with renowned practitioners such as Jean Dunand. This large depiction of a baboon captures the intelligence and nobility of this animal, an appreciation that is more widely shared today. The lacquer panel is mounted on a larger wood panel, and is framed in parchment, i.e., goat skin. (Dimensions include parchment surround; lacquer panel itself is 23 inches high by 15.25 inches wide.).
