Large oil on canvas by Gustavo Montoya (Mexican 1905-2003) This beautiful painting is 27.5 x 21.25 in. about 20% larger than his other painting of Ninas. (Image only) The portrait is of a girl in a blue dress seated in a chair with a bird (dove) in her lap. It is signed lower right. From a South Florida Socialite's Collection Biography from the Archives of askART Gustavo Montoya (1905-2003) Born in Mexico City July 9th, 1905 and died the 9th of July 2003, at 98 years. He was one of the most important artists of the Escuela Mexicana de Pintura (Mexican School Artists), especially the "Easel Painting" of the Mexican Neoealism of the 20th century. A teacher at the Academia de San Carlos (the most important school of arts) for more than thirty years -the same place he studied at in the 20´s-, which produced artists like German Gedovius, Roberto Montenegro, Leandro Izaguirre, Mateo Herrera, Eduardo Solares, Juan M. Pacheco and Francisco de la Torre and others. A versatile artist, Montoya was known as poliform expression searcher (figurative to academic and to abstract), going through modern style painting to abstract. In his long painting life, he only made ten lithograph and eight silk-screen artworks editions of his world wide known Mexican kids. Information provided by Olga Sedano Velasco. His recognizable format is a child dressed and seated in the middle of the paper. He worked in oils, sometimes incorporating mixed media, and lithography. He was part of the Mexican Muralist group with Diego Rivera, Siquieros and Orozco.

The painting depicts a young woman in red dressed in mid-20th century attire that was fashionable in the era. The walls behind her are bare, creating a stark and minimal composition. The main figure seated seems isolated among dramatic shadows and lighting, like the artworks by Edward Hopper. A unique opportunity to own an original painting from a New York Modernist painter. Raphael Soyer (1899-1987) was a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker who believed that art is to survive, it must describe and express people, their lives and times. It must communicate. From an early age Soyer and his brothers Moses and Isaac were encouraged to draw by their father, a teacher of Hebrew literature and history. Forced to leave Russia in 1912, they immigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn. In the mid 1920s, having studied at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League, Soyer painted scenes of life on New York's east side. His portrayals of derelicts, working people, and the unemployed around Union Square during the Depression reveal more of a poignant vision of the human condition than the art of social protest popular with many of his contemporaries.
