About the Item
Painted in a rich, deep palette of ruddy browns and grays, this 1929 masterpiece by Paul Tchelichew (or Tchelichev) depicting a nude male torso, the figure's hand on his hip, was executed while he was still partnered with American pianist Allen Tanner and living in Paris. Just a few years later Tchelichew moved to America with Charles Henri Ford, a relationship that survived until Tchelichew's death many years later. The artist was born in Russia but fled from there during the 1917 Revolution, later moving to Paris and submerging himself in the heady world of Gertrude Stein and Edith Sitwell, among others. He became deeply involved in theatre and ballet, collaborating with Sergei Diaghilev, impresario behind Ballets Russes, and choreographer George Balanchine. The artist was known for works influenced by Constructivism and Neo-Romanticism, but he continued to experiment and is best known now for works in the Magic Realism tradition, often focused on the male nude. This painting has a rich auction history, having been sold by Christie's and Sotheby's; a previous owner stored stored this painting at the famed Judson Art Warehouse before it was purchased by Fortress in 1996. Visible painting is 21.75 inches high by 19 inches wide.
