About the Item

An impressionist oil on canvas by listed artist Harry Hutchinson Shaw (1897-1989). A vibrant coastal scene in sunny blues depicts boats along the Costa Blanca shore in Spain, part of the Mediterranean coastline in the Alicante province. Famed for its stunning natural beauty, the Costa Blanca is known for it's pristine beaches with golden sands, turquoise waters against rugged cliffs, and hidden coves. Signed in the lower right corner. The piece is set in a beveled wooden frame in off white. gray and charcoal. Harry Hutchinson Shaw originally working as a muralist, enjoyed printmaking as well as painting. He published a bound collection of sixteen large linoleum block prints titled Quest, with eight scenes of "Coal Country" and eight scenes of "Pueblo Land." Issued in 1934, the book may have been a project for the WPA. A limited edition of 300 copies was produced by the artist, seven volumes of which are currently listed online in libraries, including the Library of Congress. Shaw was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1897. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Cleveland School of Art, and Ohio University, where earned his master's degree. He went on to establish the art department at Ball State University in Indiana, then returned to Ohio to teach at Miami University. In 1934, he published Quest, in Akron, Ohio. Beginning around 1939, he was Associate Professor of Art at the Southwestern Louisiana Institute of Liberal and Technical Learning (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) for about 20 years, except for a period serving in the military. During World War II Shaw's wife, the sculptor Margo Allen, assumed his teaching responsibilities at the Institute. After Louisiana, Shaw and Allen moved to Long Boat Key in Florida where he continued to give classes at Bradenton Art Center and the Art League of Manatee County School. In the 1960s, the couple went abroad and exhibited in Paris and Mexico City. By 1975, they were living in Sarasota. Shaw died in Florida in 1989. Harry Shaw's artworks are held in the collections of the Akron Art Museum, the Canton Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress.

Oil Painting from 1937 Harbor View by Carles Bisschops, Oil on Panel
Located in Casteren, Noord-Brabant
Beautiful and vivid painting, oil paint on panel. The painting shows a picturesque harbor on the French Mediterranean. This work is by the Flemish painter Charles-Louis Bisschops (Liège, April 25, 1894 - Rossignol, 1975). The painting has a somewhat impressionistic touch and a beautiful use of color. The blue color of the water contrasts nicely with the shady buildings. The painting is framed in a classic wooden gilded frame. On the back of the painting is an old label stating that the painting was painted in the French port of Ferrier (near Marseille on the Mediterranean). The painting is clearly signed and dated 1937. Charles Bisschops has his own Wikipedia page, information about this: Charles Bisschops was a Belgian painter, graphic artist and draftsman. He was a student at the Academy of Brussels from 1912 to 1919. The main professors were Jean Delville and Constant Montald.
