About the Item

Omphale, Queen of Lydia, buys Hercules to make him her slave, then her husband. In Ovid's account, she forces him to wear women's clothing while she provides herself with the skin of the Nemean lion and the club. Signed lower left L.DESMAREST, circa 1890-1900. Louis DESMAREST is known as a portrait painter, and it is with this genre that he exhibited one at the Salon of 1873. An exhibition label with the number 114 is affixed to the canvas in the upper right corner. Student of Gosse, Barrias, Cambon, Blanc, and Jules Breton at the Beaux-Arts. French School. Bénézit, Volume III, p.525. Very nice presence. 150x102 cm with the frame.
