Herdis Gelardi (1906–1993) was a Danish artist and designer who belonged to a generation of women artists gaining recognition in 20th-century Denmark. Her paintings reflects both the ideals of Danish modernism and the persistence of a strong naturalistic tradition., and her motifs were highly diverse, ranging from portraits, still lifes, and genre scenes to landscapes and urban views.
From 1940 to 1942, she studied under the painter Aksel Jørgensen and the sculptor Immanuel Ibsen, a formative period that shaped her artistic outlook and gave her a solid grounding in both composition and material studies.
Gelardi traveled widely and undertook several study stays abroad, experiences that enriched her artistic expression. She exhibited for many years at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibitions in Copenhagen, and in the 1950s she was a member of the artists’ association “Paraplyen.”
Today, her paintings are regarded as part of the rich tapestry of Danish 20th-century art.
