About the Item

A beautiful and very engaging original oil on canvas painting my Japanese American artist Hiroshi Honda (1910-1970). The bold colors and abstract design are really quite striking. Hiroshi Honda was a Japanese American painter who was born in Hilo, Hawaii, to Japanese parents who had immigrated to Hawaii at the turn of the 20th century. He was sent to Kumamoto, Japan at age six for schooling and help with the family business, and while there studied sumi-e ink painting. As a young man, he was conscripted into the Japanese Air Force and served for seven years before being wounded and discharged. He returned to Hilo in 1939 and on the evening of December 7th, 1941 shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he and his family were arrested by military police and eventually interned at Sand Island. He would spend his years in different camps refining his artistic skills, mainly drawings and watercolors, and raising his three young children who were all born while interned. After the war, Honda moved to New York, where he studied under Yasuo Kuniyoshi. A few years later Honda left his family (who had moved back to Hawaii. Honda's brother would later marry his ex-wife) to move back to New York and focus on his work. The Honolulu Museum of Art owns a large collection of Hiroshi Honda's works and has held two solo exhibitions of the artist. The painting is signed by Honda on the lower left and there is some faded notation/writing on the canvas verso which we can't quite make out. Honda's work rarely becomes available. A historically important painting. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Mid-Century art collections or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in about any setting. Condition:
The painting is in very good to excellent vintage condition with no discernable issues. The frame and matt have some natural organic wear consistent with age and use (please see photos). A beautiful, special work overall.
